Dr. DeSantis has been a full-time Instructor III in the University Honors Program since 1998. He received his Ph.D. in English from Brown University, and he also has a Masters of Divinity from Georgetown Theological Center, a licentiate in philosophy and a Masters in English from Fordham University. While in the Honors Program, Dr. DeSantis has created and taught many interesting courses including “Wit,” “A Phenomenology of Love,” “Why Be Ethical?,” “Law, Value, and God in America,” and “Anarchy and Heresy.”
Prior to coming to the Honors Program, Dr. DeSantis was Associate Dean of the Office of Graduate Studies. He has served as Faculty Senate President as well as a member of several important faculty committees.
Students enjoyed Dr. DeSantis’s courses and liked that he exposed them to great thinkers and literature they might not otherwise have read. “He made us think,” one student commented. They had great respect for his intellect and knowledge. Dr. DeSantis challenged the students and helped them to synthesize their ideas.
Please join us at a reception honoring Dr. DeSantis for his 13 years of service to the University Honors Program. The reception is scheduled from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 6 in the Honors Center.

Professor Desantis,
Alas, the Pacific Ocean prevents me from attending to wish you well in person, but that doesn't lessen in any way my genuine thanks and appreciation for the privilege of being allowed to partake in your courses, in particular Ancient Legacy and Democracy on Trial. As mentioned above in a bio that only scratches the surface of a brilliant career, you made me think. And you made me write. And you made me think some more. And then made me write some more. And then . . . Well, I think we get the idea.
Somehow, you managed, as do all true and great teachers, to help me overcome my own inate laziness and put this thing I call a brain to use. Again, thank you sincerely for taking the time to do so.
Also, after looking over some of the work I did in your classes, I would be remiss to not offer a profound apology as well for forcing your to read some of the pap I tried to pass off as complete papers. Sorry about those.
Best of luck to you, sir, on your next endeavor in this odd and wonderful merry-go-round of life. I can't say with certainty when I'll be back in States again, but it is with great admiration and fond memories that I hope to see you again someday, if for no other reason than to just chat.
Thank you again for everything you did for me and for the Honors Program.
With Warmest Regards,
Daniel Stapleton
Professor Desantis,
Since I suffer from the same difficulties as Daniel, I too must settle for expressing my many thanks to you in this form. You pushed this admittedly argumentative kid into challenging my preconceptions as well as others. A Herculean feat if ever there ever was one considering how much I loved playing devil's advocate. I owe you a deep debt of gratitude for challenging me academically and personally as well as helping me further my graduate education. Thank you for everything! If you are ever in Australia, please feel free to stop by and visit.
Best wishes,
Kelsey Seeger

Dr. DeSantis,
I was actually in the US while the farewell party was taking place (I live in England now), but was in Tennessee. Serendipity! In any case, you have such a legacy in honors, teaching many students to think critically, to hone their writing skills, and to broaden their horizons. I have read some of what I consider the best books in your Medieval Legacy class when I was a freshman. I am sorry to have not have the opportunity to take more classes with you.
Best of luck for the future, and thank you for inspiring so many UNM students, myself among them.

Dr. Desantis, mentor, and friend. Hello good sir. I am back in NM after too many years, UA (Tucson) MA and law school, followed by a rough patch that today has me dedicated to reporting/exposing graphically substandard health care and practices in AZ's sole long term public mental health facility, The Arizona State Hospital (Phx.). I am, as such, a writer, which in terms of calling all I have ever been. Thank you, Ed, for your heartfelt guidance as one of my most outstanding teachers, across the board.
